Historically face paints/makeup were most often toxic to its wearer. Lead poisoning was a common problem in medieval times. Women, and occasionally men, often sought to make their faces as pale as possible as a sign of a wealthier class vs those who worked in the fields and had sun darkened skin. The rabbit hole of information is interesting to me as I have researched this.
